Flame Retardant Risks in Your Home and How to Reduce Them
One of the toxins that gets a really scary face are flame retardant chemicals. This is a toxin that is covered on the news and I see it a lot on social media.
While it's good we're starting to hear about it more, I see a big problem with the WAY it's being talked about. Instead of talking about the logical steps to reduce exposure to this toxin, focus is placed on the harm.
And yes, it's good to hear about the harmful nature of a toxin. But without the other side of the coin, we can't go about fixing the situation we're in. And that situation is that we are exposed to toxic flame retardant chemicals throughout our day.
And what's more important to understand is that our kids are being exposed more than we are due to their pajamas and clothing, strollers and car seats.
But if I can put a different spin on the sheer amount of exposure, it would be this:
If we are exposed frequently in our home and in spaces that we can control, then we have SO much opportunity to reduce the exposure through our habits and product swaps.
And if nothing else, know that flame retardants are highly prevalent in our dust from textiles and materials in our home. This means by following these few simple steps below, you'll be well on your ay to reducing exposure to flame retardant chemicals:
Dust on a regular basis
Use a HEPA filter vacuum at least once a week
Run an air purifier (and make sure the filters are clean)
Use a high quality furnace filter and change your HVAC furnace filter frequently
And after you take those steps, you can start using the information in this video and in the blog post (healthyhouseontheblock.com/flame-retardant.html) to really ditch more of this toxin in your home for good.

Переглядів 7519 годин тому
I love a good systematic process when it comes to creating the non toxic house you want. But with so many non toxic house ideas out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start or what to start with. And when I see homeowners get to this point there is often this stand-still that occurs. They don’t know where to go next or they’re not sure exactly what steps they should take. Non toxic ...

Переглядів 8421 день тому
When you’re working to create a natural home, a healthy home, there are some things that you obviously can’t change. But how do you decide what to leave and then what do you do when you aren’t going to change an area of your home? Maybe you’re like me in the sense that not every natural home change is possible, or feasible. But what do you do with these areas of your home and lifestyle that the...
Green Building Materials: Adhesives, Caulking & Construction Glues
Переглядів 90Місяць тому
Home projects can be a huge source of unnecessary toxins that get brought into your home. Many construction materials and building supplies contain harsh toxins that off gas and pollute our indoor space and burden our bodies down, leaving them tired and overworked as they detox these toxins. But what if everytime you did a home project you could choose green building materials that contained al...
TRUSTED COMPANIES FOR HEALTHY LIVING: BRAND TRANSPARENCY
Переглядів 108Місяць тому
Greenwashing is something that’s getting easier and easier to detect, and most companies can’t live behind a smokescreen for too long. But that doesn’t mean you’ll inherently know what to look for when it comes to finding a trusted brand or company that supports your healthy living. The truth is that many times this is what halts our progress in reducing toxins. We get stuck on making decisions...
Buying an Old House? You Need to Weigh These Options
Переглядів 71Місяць тому
Sometimes old houses get this reputation for being an unhealthy space. In fact, I have heard so many buyers remind me that they don’t need a radon or mold test because they’re “buying a new house.” But the truth is that old homes have benefits that new homes may not have. And sometimes, this puts old homes ahead of the game in terms of health and wellness for our space. That being said, you hav...
Everything You Need to Know about about "What Are Phthalates?"
Переглядів 132Місяць тому
If you were to focus on one toxin to remove from your home, perhaps it would be phthalates. Not only does 100% of house dust contain this toxin, but it is present in our bodies almost all the time even though we’re able to get rid of it through natural detoxification relatively quickly. What does all that mean? It means we’re exposed to phthalates almost constantly throughout our day and our bo...

What’s your thoughts on titanium cutting blocks?
On earthware site, i only saw serving boards (rectangles), not large cutting boards. :(
Could one use coconut oil instead of mineral oil?
Did you mention anything about how installation should be properly put in to prevent mold? I thought I heard you mention it during the talk but when I went back to find it I couldn’t. Thanks
This makes so much sense, but dang people are so hardheaded about “making” their own laundry soap, yes it’s soap, not detergent! I cringe when I see people say they put it into cold water, I love when they strip their clothes to acknowledge the buildup!
this was so helpfull, thank you so much
My uncle was an upholsterer for a living and now has Parkinson's. I often wonder. Thanks for posting these. Non-toxic options: The Futon shop Medley Maiden Home Burrow Eco-Sofa Pure $$ Savvy Rest $$
Thanks for sharing your insight. I appreciate it!
How do you find a good doctor?
there was a leak in my roof and the Co-op was supposed to fix it. they did but the mold in the attic was not addressed and they refuse to address it. its making me sick. and the humidity is really high as well. I don’t know where the humidity is coming from…we have dehumidifiers but I think it not enough.…we’re going to move so I am not going to try and fix it.
Just a reminder that if you are selling and not renting...you have to disclose this issue...
I had no idea. Thank you!
I had SBS for 5 yrs back and forth to the drs no help in 2022 found out house had mold it was so bad I developed SEPSIS from the many infections I had over the yrs landlord admitted liability because he knew the moment I called a professional also found out the house was infested with termites and were there before i moved in landlord knew that as well because he lived in the house prior before I moved in and tried to hide it hoping I wouldn’t find out this man made me think I was crazy smh I have not recovered completely from the mold it’s been a yr since I moved out this man has destroyed my life completely and because of him I can’t have children had to get a hysterectomy 😢 all because of rent money 😢
I'm looking for a safe bread maker and metal utensils without lead. Thank you
Spider plants are just 1 of the many plants that purify the air and remove formaldehyde as well.
Can i use internally? Inside on mouth?
Very valuable information. Please never take this video down. I’m surprised this does not have more views. Thank you!
I been using Plant Therapy oils for years.
Great info. Any suggestions for people who live in apartments and don’t have control over flooring?
Do you have any brand recommendations for curtains??
Do you still get the dirty electricity even while the light bulb is off? I live in an apartment and I can't change the bulbs unfortunately, if I leave those lights off and use incandescent in a lamp would I cut down the emf and dirty electricty?
great information!
6 parts sodium carbonate 6 parts sodium bicarbonate 2 parts epsom salts 1 part sea salt. Essential oils just for scent I use 1-2 tbsp per load depending on size/soil
I noticed that NaturalSloth uses what looks like a wooden wick. Are these just as good as cotton?
Friendly request is to get to the actionable info sooner in your video :)
Please get to the point sooner. You repeat yourself many times.
I think you made some good points. I'm currently researching surfactants, as I think that is the missing link in homemade laundry soap. 2 of the ingredients you mentioned also help soften water, so that doesn't worry me.
Thanks for this!! I was about to pull the trigger on 2800 sq ft of LVP and now I'm going to get engineered instead. There's always a hidden cost to everything. In this case it's our health. Even Cali and Shaw still use replacement chemicals that are just as bad. I dig some digging after seeing this. They're really no better, all LVP is toxic and the sales people know this. This is going to be the next Teflon epidemic.
Engineered flooring glue has VOC
@@KingoftheJiangl Taylor Ironwood makes a no VOC glue for hardwood.
Spent a lot of money to get started clothes stunk won't waste my money again doesn't work
Thank you so much!! This is what I've been looking for!! Now.....on with the task of cleaning up my home😅❣
Make it easy and not put it in anything
I really appreciate your work! Your videos are very informative and well structured. Thank you so much for sharing this information! You are awesome ❤

Don’t forget to only buy organic coffee beans.
That's why I switched to carbon steel.
Remember what party outlawed the safe quite, incandescent lamp, the DNC.
Long story short, use the old incandescent bulbs whenever possible, because they are healthier for you. Especially use in lamps near your head, i.e. bedrooom, next to couches, etc.
Thanks for video. I can't afford Extremadura, all clad is just not non stick enough for my fam. What are your thoughts on Caraway?
Great video! Do you know the model name/number of the air purifier? Thank you have a nice day🌸☀️
what floor companies do you recommend? we are re-doing our floors and want a non-toxic option! thanks :)

Very helpful
I bought the natural rubber one but I realized that my knife cuts through it, leaving little cuts all over it. Is it safe to consume like that? I am just worried and don't want to get rubber in my system
Thank you for this!!
I'm in a unique situation in a pristine mountian wilderness of Brazil. In this place it is so unapoiled you can literally drink the river water with no filtration and the last thing I want to do is intridice contamination of any kind to this precious land. Above that I also feel the need to keep my own body in this same codiroona dn have become quite sensitive to the toxicity of the laundry soaps a bailable here in the market. So... My household situation is currently hand washing (which makes the chemicles situation quite intense) and also cold water. I'm not sure if the water is hard or soft but there is no limeatone here, only clay and surface rising rainwater. I'm on the lookout for Borax here and an option for washing soda and will be working on making my own castle bar soap soon which I will use a as the base. Typically I find a hand wash to really out do any machine I have ever seen but the convenience will be enough to have me looking for a machine option when we have power to run it. Curious is anyone else here has experience hand washing with homade soaps or with environmental factors as a motive for moving away from toxic store bought options...
I love my MA-50 which I bought 9 months ago as it is working like a champ. I just got my second MA-50 for another room recently. This model is a must have for your house.
While I cannot say that I have found any compelling data about the "dirty electricity", there is evidence that infrared spectrum has advantages to humans (sun, warm light from fire, candles etc). Would be nice to see some discussion of the use of incandescent and halogen light bulbs in relation to infrared's benefits.
So it all comes down to $$. You chose to endorse a company for $$ instead of making your own. I won’t watch someone willing to sell out for $$ This person is not knowledgeable she is a “digital creator” selling UA-cam videos and all the products she can I make and use the same recipe my Mother used in her washer. I make the soap used in my recipe, I control 100% of my ingredients. The same can not be said for anything mass produced!
4:39 don't forget BPF!
This is super helpful. Perhaps an answer to prayer. THANK YOU so much. You've put me on the right path to my window and curtain/blinds quandary. Love from California.
P.S. I'm a new subscriber❤
You stated that the cutting board should not have mineral oil in it then when mentioning the wood utensils you said the use something with mineral oil in it to maintain them. It's conflicting information.
Perhaps the one she recomended doesn't have phthalates, is waht I'm guessing, but I don't know.
Hi there Could you tell me where do l find Cali and Show floor? Please help me my contractor want me to buy the floor by tomorrow.
